Using an infrared sauna over a traditional sauna does provide some distinct advantages, largely due to the differences in how heat is delivered and how the body responds to that heat. Here are some of the added benefits of using an infrared sauna compared to traditional steam saunas:

  • Deeper Tissue Penetration: Infrared saunas use infrared heaters to emit infrared light experienced as radiant heat, which is absorbed directly by the skin. This allows for deeper tissue penetration, potentially offering more significant pain relief and muscle relaxation than the superficial heat of a traditional sauna.
  • Operates at Lower Temperatures: Infrared saunas operate at a lower temperature range (usually between 120°F and 150°F) compared to traditional saunas (which can be between 150°F and 185°F). This lower temperature can make the sauna experience more comfortable and accessible for people who cannot tolerate the high heat of traditional saunas.
  • Efficient Sweating at Lower Temperatures: Despite the lower temperatures, users of infrared saunas often report experiencing intense sweating sessions. This is because the infrared heat is directly warming the body rather than the air around, making it a more efficient way to induce a sweat.
  • Energy Efficiency: Infrared saunas are generally more energy-efficient than traditional saunas. They heat up faster and use less electricity to maintain their temperature, which can lead to lower operating costs.
  • Potential for Greater Detoxification: Some proponents of infrared saunas claim that the deeper penetration of infrared heat can mobilize toxins from fat stores more effectively, leading to a more significant detoxification process. However, scientific evidence to fully support this claim is limited.
  • Improved Cardiovascular Health: The direct heat from infrared saunas can increase heart rate and circulation in a way that mimics the effects of moderate exercise. Some studies suggest that infrared sauna use may have a beneficial impact on blood pressure and cardiovascular health, potentially offering greater benefits in this area compared to traditional saunas.

While both infrared and traditional saunas offer health and wellness benefits, including relaxation, detoxification, and pain relief, the choice between the two often comes down to personal preference, specific health goals, and how one’s body responds to the different types of heat. It’s also important to consider that the scientific community continues to research and explore the full range of benefits and potential differences between these sauna types.

Infrared saunas offer a variety of health and wellness benefits, making them a popular choice for those looking to improve their physical and mental well-being. Here’s a list of some of the most commonly reported benefits:

  • Detoxification: Infrared saunas can help your body release a number of toxins, including heavy metals like mercury and lead, through sweating.
  • Relaxation and Stress Reduction: The warmth of the sauna relaxes muscles, reduces tension throughout the body, and can significantly lower stress levels.
  • Pain Relief: Infrared heat penetrates tissue, joints, and muscles, reducing pain and easing discomfort from conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, and other chronic pain conditions.
  • Improved Circulation: The heat from infrared saunas increases core body temperature, which stimulates blood circulation. Improved circulation can promote healing, reduce inflammation, and decrease pain.
  • Skin Purification: Sweating opens pores and helps reduce blemishes and acne by removing dirt and oils. The increased circulation also promotes healthier, more vibrant skin.
  • Weight Loss: The heat generated by an infrared sauna can cause your core temperature to increase, which can lead to a higher heart rate—the same increase in heart rate that you experience when exercising. This can help burn calories and contribute to weight loss.
  • Enhanced Immune System: Regular use of an infrared sauna can stimulate the production of white blood cells, helping to strengthen the immune system and increase resistance to disease.
  • Improved Sleep: The relaxation benefits of infrared sauna use can also lead to improved sleep patterns, helping individuals fall asleep faster and enjoy a deeper, more restorative sleep.
  • Muscle Recovery: Athletes often use infrared saunas to promote muscle recovery after intense workouts. The heat helps reduce muscle tension and eliminate lactic acid, promoting faster recovery.
  • Reduction in Blood Pressure: Regular infrared sauna sessions have been shown to lower blood pressure by promoting dilation of blood vessels and improving circulation.

It’s important to note that while many individuals experience significant benefits from using an infrared sauna, results can vary. Additionally, those with certain health conditions should consult with a healthcare provider before using an infrared sauna.

It is completely personal preference. Some may enjoy the sauna first so their muscles are looser when they get a massage. On the other hand, if someone’s body doesn’t cool down quickly, it may not be comfortable to get a massage while still sweating. There will be time after your sauna for a quick rinse off in the shower.
