What is Acupuncture Therapy?

Acupuncture is an ancient practice rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, used for thousands of years to promote health and well-being. This technique involves inserting very thin needles into specific points on the body, known as acupuncture points, to stimulate and balance the body’s energy flow, or Qi (pronounced “chee”).

How Acupuncture Works

The human body has over 2,000 acupuncture points connected by pathways called meridians. According to traditional Chinese medicine, these meridians allow the flow of Qi, which is vital for maintaining health. When Qi is blocked or unbalanced, it can lead to illness and discomfort. Acupuncture aims to restore the natural flow of Qi, thereby promoting healing and improving overall wellness.

Benefits of Acupuncture

Acupuncture is widely recognized for relieving pain and treating various health conditions. Some common issues treatments can help include:

  • Chronic pain (such as back or neck pain)
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Insomnia and other sleep disorders
  • Digestive problems
  • Menstrual cramps and other reproductive issues
  • Smoking cessation
  • Weight loss

Fire Cupping

Fire cupping can be added to your acupuncture session to promote healing and help relieve pain. During a fire cupping session, a practitioner places glass cups on the skin and creates a vacuum by briefly heating the air inside the cup. This suction draws the skin and underlying tissues into the cup, increasing blood flow to the area. Fire cupping is often used to alleviate muscle tension, improve circulation, and reduce inflammation. It can also help with respiratory issues like colds and asthma, as well as enhance overall health by stimulating the body’s natural healing processes.

Acupuncture treatment is surprisingly comfortable, with many patients relax so much they even fall asleep during their session. The fine needles used are as thin as a human hair and, unlike the hollow needles used for injections or drawing blood, they are solid, making insertion more comfortable. This allows for a soothing experience that even children and toddlers can easily tolerate.

Traditional acupuncture is very safe when conducted by a skilled and licensed acupuncturist who utilizes single-use, sterile needles. Potential side effects might include slight drowsiness and minimal bleeding. Severe side effects, such as infections, needle breakage, or lung punctures, are extremely uncommon, happening in fewer than one in 10,000 treatments.

The frequency of acupuncture sessions varies depending on the individual’s condition, health goals, and response to treatment. Generally, a common recommendation is to start with one to two sessions per week for the first few weeks. This initial frequency helps to establish a solid foundation for healing. As symptoms improve, sessions can be gradually reduced to once a week, then once every two weeks, and eventually to a maintenance schedule of once a month or as needed. It is always best to consult a licensed acupuncturist who can tailor a treatment plan to your needs and health condition.

Acupuncture treatment may be utilized to provide the much-needed relief from a stubborn or complicated medical issue. Needles may be inserted in the ear, hands, face, arms and legs or feet. Our acupuncturist will locate the points that need the most stimulation and insert the needles into those points.

It depends on what your goals are. Each massage modality is complementary in a different way. A lymph drainage massage is excellent for reducing inflammation, while a deep tissue massage is great for releasing muscular tension.
